German 15 & 1/2″ 1988 Karl Bauer #5151 Viola

This attractive 15 & 1/2 inch viola for sale was made under the trade name Karl Bauer.  Made sometime in the late 1980’s, it was most likely imported into the US by William Lewis and Son, the usual carriers of the Karl Bauer line.  This particular Bauer viola, # 5151, is a very decent viola; it has a nicely flamed two piece back, good carving, and a nice finish.  The varnish is a little worn in places from previous use, but the viola has no history of repairs.  The color is a nice golden orange.  The tone of this viola is typically German; it is bold, moderately dark, and it projects quite well.  Since this viola is a 15 & 1/2″, it is best suited to an advanced young player or a small statured adult.
